600,000 Years to Create Your Morning Coffee
In our previous post, we explored the Oromo tradition of buna qalaa—a story of human ingenuity and ancient tradition, with tales of divine intervention. While the legends speak of gods, the molecular record tells a story of a literal genetic miracle.
If you want to understand why coffee tastes the way it does, we have to travel back 600,000 years to the moment of modern coffee’s birth.
Hybridization
Modern genomic sequencing is finally unearthing the true evolutionary history of Coffea arabica. A 2024 study led by researcher Jarkko Salojärvi reconstructed the species’ evolution, revealing that coffee didn't simply "appear"—it was the result of a rare hybridization event.
Approximately 600,000 years ago, pollen from C. canephora (commonly known as Robusta) met C. eugenioides, a rare, low-caffeine species of coffee indigenous to East Africa. This specific encounter created the genetic foundation for the C. arabica species we prize today.
From the Great Rift Valley
As the plant continued to evolve, archaeological and genomic data show a clear path of migration. Roughly 30,000 years ago, C. arabica populations split between the eastern and western sides of the Great Rift Valley. While the western plants remained wild, the eastern descendants eventually made their way to the Yemeni port of Mocha, setting the stage for the plant's global distribution.
A Precarious Foundation: The Genetic Bottleneck
Regardless of the plant's 600,000-year history, the coffee industry today is built on an incredibly fragile foundation.
Most modern C. arabica consumed—some 60% of the world’s supply—can be traced back to just two individual plants cultivated roughly 300 years ago: the Typica and Bourbon varieties (We’re planning a piece on varietals).
This genetic bottleneck points to an incredible story of survival. However, and as most educated environmentalists understand, it reveals a startling truth: C. arabica coffee is descended from such a narrow lineage that it faces significant vulnerability to environmental changes, pests and pathogens. Proof is in the coffee crop trends over the last 10 years. Shortages of coffee are a common occurrence – here are some of the most devastating events:
· 2021 - Brazil (Frost)
· 2024 - Brazil (Worst drought in 70 years)
· Multi-year - Viet Nam (Heat and drought)
· Ongoing - Honduras and Central America (Leaf Rust)
Understanding that our coffee is a product of both an ancient genetic miracle and a very modern, fragile supply chain adds a new layer of appreciation to every cup.
